Another wave of Arctic air is expected to affect large portions of the United States in the coming days, as cleanup efforts continue following last weekend’s massive winter storm. Weather authorities warned that the new system could bring dangerously low temperatures and additional snowfall to several regions.
The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) stated that a significant storm system may produce heavy snowfall in parts of the southeastern United States. According to forecasts, polar winds are expected to move southward from the Northern Great Plains, passing through the Midwest and reaching the Gulf Coast, increasing the risk of severe winter conditions in areas not typically exposed to such extremes.

Meteorologists indicated that the storm is linked to a disruption of the polar vortex, a large mass of cold air that usually circulates over the North Pole. When the vortex weakens or shifts, Arctic air can plunge into lower latitudes. Some scientists suggest that climate change may be intensifying these events by altering long-standing atmospheric patterns.

The NWS warned that minimum temperatures could break records, particularly in southern states such as Florida. Authorities expressed concern over the potential impact on vulnerable populations, including the elderly, people experiencing homelessness, and those without adequate heating. The agricultural sector is also expected to face challenges, as freezing temperatures threaten sensitive crops and livestock.
This new Arctic outbreak follows a major winter storm that struck the country days earlier, which, according to official reports and local media, resulted in more than 100 deaths. The previous storm blanketed areas from New Mexico in the southwest to Maine in the northeast with snow and freezing rain, causing widespread travel disruptions, power outages, and hazardous conditions.
