Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has formally requested that the United States provide security guarantees for Ukraine lasting between 30 and 50 years, underscoring Kyiv’s push for long-term stability amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. Zelenskyy disclosed the proposal after holding discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, who, according to the Ukrainian leader, said he would “think about” the request.
Speaking at a press briefing in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, Zelenskyy explained that Ukraine is already covered by existing agreements that include 15-year security guarantees from the United States. However, he stressed that the current framework is insufficient to ensure lasting peace and deterrence, arguing that extended commitments would help prevent future aggression and provide investors and citizens with greater confidence in Ukraine’s security outlook.
Zelenskyy also announced that preparations are underway for a new round of high-level negotiations between Ukrainian and U.S. officials, expected to take place in Kyiv in January. Ukrainian authorities are currently coordinating the agenda and logistical arrangements for the talks, which are expected to focus on security cooperation, defense assistance, and broader strategic coordination.
On the prospects for peace, Zelenskyy said President Trump briefed him on discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a proposed 20-point peace plan. According to Zelenskyy, Trump conveyed that Putin has indicated he is “ready for peace.” While welcoming any diplomatic progress, Zelenskyy expressed caution, emphasizing the need for concrete actions. “For us, it is important that words match deeds,” he said.
