Beyond hits like “El Gran Varón” and “Idilio,” Willie Colón left a legacy that extended far beyond salsa music. He maintained an active presence in social and political issues.
He was a champion of the Latino community in the United States and participated in campaigns related to social justice, education, and immigrant rights.
In the political arena, he expressed strong opinions on the situation in Puerto Rico, Latino leadership, and civic engagement. He even hinted at a potential entry into Puerto Rican politics in 2009 after acquiring a property.
“I haven’t said I’m going to run for anything, but I’m not ruling it out. I feel honored, and it’s an honor that they’re considering me. One of the most important things for me is trying to be a good Puerto Rican, and if they’re considering me, I feel great,” he said.
