Russia has accused the United States of exploiting what it called an “imaginary Iranian threat” as a pretext to overthrow Iran’s constitutional order, intensifying diplomatic tensions amid escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking this week, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, described Washington’s appeals urging Iranians to take power from their leaders as “cynical and inhumane.” She alleged that recent negotiations with Iran served as a cover for a broader regime-change strategy.
“There is no doubt that the fabricated Iranian threat, repeated for years, was merely a pretext to implement a long-standing plan to violently overthrow the constitutional order of a sovereign state that does not suit Washington and Tel Aviv,” Zakharova said.
Moscow’s statements come after the outbreak of hostilities involving the United States and Israel. Russia, which maintains a strategic partnership treaty with Iran, has condemned what it called destabilizing actions in the region.
President Vladimir Putin denounced the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, describing it as a “cynical assassination” carried out on the first day of the conflict. The Kremlin warned that such developments risk further destabilizing the Middle East.
